Police closed all westbound lanes on the H-1 freeway Monday morning near the Waipahu offramp due to a multiple-vehicle accident.
The closure occurred at about 7:45 a.m. By 8:30 a.m. police reopened two westbound lanes and the Waipahu offramp.
Nine people were involved in the accident, and four were transported to a hospital.
A 22-year-old woman, a 3-year-old child and a 1-year-old baby were in stable condition after the crash. A 32-year-old man injured in the accident was listed in serious but stable condition, according to the Emergency Services Department.
Big Isle police hunt equipment, laptop thieves
Thieves over the weekend made off with $15,000 worth of tools and equipment from agricultural land along the Big Island’s Hamakua Coast.
Police said that between 1:30 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m. Monday, two Honda generators and other equipment and tools were stolen from land along Hawaii Belt Highway (Route 19) at the 38-mile marker in the Kalopa area.
In a separate case, Big Isle police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two men who attempted to steal a student’s computer and backpack at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
At about 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, police said, a 21-year-old man was on his computer when he was approached by two men.
Campus security said the men grabbed the victim’s computer and backpack and ran. There was a brief struggle between the victim and the suspects before the suspects fled with the items.
The 21-year-old man chased the culprits, who then dropped the backpack and laptop and left the campus.
Police described the men as in their late teens to early 20s.
A surveillance image shows that one was wearing a blue tank top emblazoned with the word “beer,” black shorts, light-colored shoes and a dark baseball cap. The other wore a dark bandanna that covered his nose and mouth. He also wore a gray, hooded sweatshirt, cargo shorts and dark footwear.
