Knitter Emily Evans of Honolulu is a “Star Wars” fan who likes Princess Leia best because she’s a strong female character. Her boyfriend, Kana‘ina Warren, prefers Darth Vader, while Evans’ 6-year-old son, Fin, loves the teddy bear-like Ewoks and has a “Star Wars”-decorated room.
Every year, the family exchanges handmade gifts with a “Star Wars” spin. Evans, who first learned to crochet from her grandmother at the age of 12, employs her skills to create unique gifts, including a beanie with green Yoda-like ears and a version inspired by Princess Leia’s rolled hair buns. The roly-poly BB-8 droid from the new “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” would appreciate the beanie made by Evans that has orange and gray stripes on a white background.
She does not sell them; crocheting is strictly her hobby.
Last Christmas, Evans crocheted a Death Star pillow for Warren. The free pattern is available at popsdemilk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Death-Star-Pattern.pdf. Patterns are also available at ravelry.com.
“Star Wars”-themed knit beanies are widely available on etsy.com, and patterns also can be found online. If you’re interested in learning to crochet, check out the friendly Aloha Knitters group at alohaknitters.wordpress.com or on Facebook. Evans can be contacted at emevans808@gmail.com.
