Keani Passi of the Chaminade women’s volleyball team has earned All-West Region honors following a historic season for the Silverswords.
The senior outside hitter from Pearl City was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) first team West Region. She also received All-West Region second team honors from the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA). Passi is the first player in program history to be named All-West region by either the AVCA or D2CCA.
Passi set program records with 489 kills and a 4.29 kills per set average. She helped lead Chaminade to the second-most wins in program history (19), and was named Pacific West Conference Newcomer of the Year.
Matas named to All-West Region first team
Notre Dame de Namur’s Tyler Matas, the Pacific West Defender of the Year, was named to the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) All-West Region soccer first team on Monday.
Matas, a graduate of Mililani High School, is a four-time all-conference selection, including first team honors this season. It’s the second time Matas has been named all-region. He was named to the third team as a sophomore.
Three other players with Hawaii ties also received all-West Region distinction. Hawaii Pacific’s Jackson Groves and Javier Risco Garcia, and Notre Dame de Namur’s Jack Ewert (Pacific Buddhist Academy) were all named to the third team.
HPU signs three to women’s volleyball
Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball coach Daryl Kapis announced the signing of three California prep stars for the 2016-17 season.
Outside hitters Perla Escobar (Calexico High), Ali McCollum (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) and libero Katie Barkley (Redondo Union High) all commited to play for the Sharks next year.
Escobar, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, is a two-time Imperial Valley Player of the Year and first-team selection. She is also a member of Mexico’s U-18 National Team. McCollum is a 6-foot-2 outside hitter who played four years of varsity volleyball and led her team to the Mission League Championship in two of her four seasons. Barkley helped her team to the CIF 1AA state championship last season and earned DailyPrepTalk All-SoCal Libero honors each of the past two seasons. She also played beach volleyball and won two AAU National beach tournaments.
