Paraglider walks away from crash above Lahainaluna High
A paraglider walked away from a hard landing in the mountains behind Lahainaluna High School this afternoon.
Two students called for help at 2:47 p.m. Monday after seeing the paraglider collapse and spiral down out of sight near the Lahainaluna “L” on the hill behind the school.
Fire officials said a helicopter that was fighting a brush fire was dispatched to Lahaina and the man who was paragliding was found several hundred yards behind the “L.” The man gave the sign that he was OK.
The man who suffered non life-threatening injuries said he was looking for wind when he experienced a down draft that collapsed one of his wings, a fire spokesman said.
The helicopter airlifted the man to the school’s football field where he declined transport by paramedics and was taken by friends to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
