Couple rescued in windy seas off Maui
Maui firefighters and lifeguards aided two visitors who lost their standup paddle boards in windy seas off Kaanapali on Saturday.
Resort security guards patrolling the area called 911 at 10:33 a.m. after watching the pair struggle to make any progress against the wind, Maui County said by email.
Lahaina firefighters arrived on the beach fronting the Maui Kai Resort at 10:41 a.m.
By then, the couple had fallen off their boards and could not catch them as they blew away.
Witnesses pointed out the man, 48, swimming towards shore about 25 yards out.
The woman, 52, was drifting about a quarter- to a half-mile offshore. An ocean safety rescue watercraft picked her up and brought her back to the beach.
