A 34-year-old Napili man died Monday night after being thrown from his Jeep Wrangler in a single-vehicle crash on Maui’s Honoapiilani Highway, police said.
Adam Newkirk lost control of the vehicle at 10:08 p.m. as he was driving north on Honoapiilani Highway near mile post marker 34, according to police.
Police said the vehicle left the roadway on the right shoulder and struck an embankment, veered back onto the roadway, crossing both lanes of travel, and overturned on the makai shoulder.
Newkirk was ejected from his vehicle and suffered fatal injuries, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene
A preliminary investigation revealed that Newkirk was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.
Speed, drugs and alcohol are possible factors in the crash, police said.
Newkirk’s death marks Maui County’s 20th traffic fatality, compared with 19 at this time last year.

A man told firefighters that he was injured Tuesday morning when something bit him on the ankle as he swam at Kehena Beach on the Big Island’s south shore.
The man suffered a small gash and was taken to a hospital in non-life-threatening condition.
Firefighters said the swimmer said he did not spot what bit him.
A state Department of Land and Natural Resources spokeswoman said officials were investigating the incident.
