For the fifth year in a row, Pearl City swept the high school team bowling championships.
Led by boys individual champion Kristopher Yadao, the Chargers pulled away in the Billy Tee’s/HHSAA Bowling State Tournament boys team competition to beat Hawaii Baptist by 649 pins at Kauai Bowl. The Pearl City boys’ team streak reached six with the victory.
Yadao, a junior, posted a 2,001 pinfall over nine games for a 222.3 average. He bested second-place finisher Chayen Kuamo’o-Malama of Waipahu by 172 pins.
Pearl City posted the best pinfall in six of the nine games, leading wire to wire and putting up the best number of the competition in the final game, a 1,063. Bradley Nakamura (third place), Ryan Kajihiro (fifth), Blaise Dela Pena (18th) and Cody-Schayne Castelo (69th) rounded out the Pearl City lineup.
Damien finished third.
Leilehua sophomore Gwen Maeha won the girls individual title, rallying past defending champion Shelby Suzuki of Hawaii Baptist to win by 12 pins.
Suzuki, a senior, led by eight pins entering the final game.
The Pearl City girls trailed HBA by 40 pins entering the penultimate game, taking the lead with a best-of-tournament 946 in game eight and holding on in the final game to win by 53 pins.
Kylie Malilay (third place) was the Chargers’ top finisher, followed by Kristin Frost (fourth), Sydni Inafuku (13th), Chelsi Morishige (14th) and Chailah Ganiron (36th).
Mililani finished third, 341 points out of second.
