A Kanoelani Elementary School student on his way home was attacked by a man in an attempted kidnapping Wednesday, Pearl City police said.
Police Sgt. Arthur Kurasaki said the incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday as the boy was crossing a nearby baseball field.
The boy, 11, told police the man pulled at his backpack and pushed him to the ground. He said he managed to get away and ran back to the school.
The man was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, with curly hair, a cut-out T-shirt and jeans.
Firefighters control Nanakuli house fire
Honolulu firefighters were battling a two-alarm house fire Wednesday night near Nanakuli High and Intermediate School.
Fire officials said that when firefighters arrived about 8:35 p.m. at the 89-200 block of Palikea Road, the single-story house was engulfed by flames.
Part of the roof had collapsed, and firefighters were checking out the stability of the structure before entering the house.
It was brought under control at 9:18 p.m.

Date change for beach meeting
Kauai County has rescheduled the Black Pot Beach Park Master Plan community meeting to 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Hanalei Elementary School cafeteria.
The meeting originally was scheduled for today.
Kauai officials said in a news release Wednesday that Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. will be able to attend the rescheduled event and listen to the discussion.
The master plan proposes facility improvements at Black Pot Beach Park over the next 20 years.

Gala to benefit surfer nonprofit
The Friends of Bethany Hamilton will hold its first gala in Hawaii from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Makanalani Estate in Kilauea, Kauai.
The surfing champion and her husband, Adam Dirks, will attend. A dinner reception, dancing lessons and a silent auction will be featured .
All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Friends of Bethany Hamilton, which holds conferences and retreats to encourage those who have lost limbs or experienced other difficult situations.
