Hawaii State Junior Golf Association president and co-founder Mary Bea Porter-King was inducted into the Southern California Golf Association Hall of Fame Oct 29, in Universal City, Calif.
Porter-King grew up playing in the Southern California Junior Golf Association and went on to Arizona State — where she is also in the Hall of Fame — and a 35-year LPGA career.
After moving to Hawaii, she founded the HSJGA, which has flourished since its inception.
The Mary Bea Porter Humanitarian Award was created after she saved a life during an LPGA tournament in 1998. In 2011, the PGA of America recognized Porter-King as the year’s PGA First Lady of Golf.
She also served on the USGA Executive Committee from 2001-2006, the PGA of America’s Board of Directors from 2006-2009 and was a member of both the USGA and PGA Rules Committees. She has officiated more than 75 national championships.
"Mary Bea is everything you would want in an advocate for golf," said Jim Vernon, past president of the USGA and SCGA, at Porter-King’s induction. "What she has given back to the game is unbelievable."
Porter-King and former ASU teammate Jane Bastanchury Booth are the fifth and sixth women inducted into the SCGA Hall, after Dinah Shore, Mickey Wright, Babe Zaharias and Amy Alcott. Corey Pavin and Craig Stadler were inducted last year.
Hayashi hanging at qualifying
Hilo’s Kevin Hayashi has a share of fifth place halfway through the Champions Tour Regional Qualifying in San Jacinto, Calif.
The Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer, and eight-time Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year, fired a 70 Wednesday at the The Country Club at Soboba Springs. His two-day total of 142 is four shots out of first, and three ahead of Japanese star Joe Ozaki.
Hayashi, 53, is competing against 58 golfers in one of the three senior tour regionals. Top finishers play the final Q-School, Dec. 1-4. The top five there earn Champions Tour cards for 2016.
McLachlin doesn’t move on
A final-round 77 kept Hawaii’s Parker McLachlin from advancing out of the Web.com Tour’s Second Qualifying Stage event in Kingwood, Texas, last week.
McLachlin was tied for 11th after the third round, but shot 77 Friday to finish tied for 38th, at even-par 288. The top 21 and ties moved on to the Final Stage, where they earn at least conditional status on the tour in 2016.
McLachlin played on the Web.com Tour in 2006 and on the PGA Tour from 2007-2010, winning the 2008 Reno-Tahoe Open.
Seniors honored at ceremony
Six high school seniors who signed letters of intent were honored at the opening ceremony of the Asia Pacific Junior Cup, earlier this month at Waikoloa.
`Iolani’s Zoey Akagi-Bustin signed with New Mexico State and Punahou’s Aiko Leong will join Rose Huang — Akagi-Bustin’s former teammate — at Brigham Young. Mililani’s Mari Nishiura will play for Nevada.
Among the boys, Moanalua’s Kyosuke Hara and Shawn Lu are headed for Oregon State and Punahou’s Kyle Suppa to USC.
