Kauai County will receive more than $13 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to revitalize Lihue.
Among the projects that will be covered by the federal grant are various upgrades and the addition of pedestrian and bike lanes on Rice Street; a shared-use path from Lihue Civic Center to Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall; and bicycle and pedestrian improvements on Hoolako Street.
Other projects include sidewalks on Hoala and Kalena streets, a bicycle boulevard added to Pualole and Malae streets and expanded transit services for the Lihue Civic Center.
The county’s share of the project is $2.5 million.
Man charged with robbery, assault in Hilo bank incident
A 40-year-old man was charged Monday after he allegedly assaulted a man using an ATM in the parking lot of a bank in Hilo.
Dominic Simon Freitas was charged with unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, robbery, assault and criminal property damage. His bail was set at $38,000.
Police said a 53-year-old Hilo man was using an ATM when another man reportedly entered his parked car at 11:45 a.m. Sunday in the lot of a bank on Pauahi Street. When the victim confronted the suspect, he was struck in the face, and the car’s door panel was damaged. The suspect then fled on foot.
The victim suffered minor injuries but declined treatment.
