Lawmaker suggests a camp to segregate Syrian refugees in U.S.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. >> A Republican state senator says Syrian refugees should be segregated in a camp if the state accepts them.

Sen. Elaine Morgan emailed a member of the public on Tuesday and the message was inadvertently sent to lawmakers, WPRI-TV reported.

Morgan joined other local Republicans in saying the Democratic governor should refuse to host Syrian refugees after the Paris attacks, which killed 129 people. Officials have said the mastermind of last week’s attacks bragged in Islamic State propaganda of his ability to move back and forth between Europe and Syria undetected.

Morgan said if Syrian refugees are allowed into Rhode Island, a camp could segregate them and protect U.S. citizens. She wrote that "the Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape and decapitate" non-Muslims.

She later said she mistakenly sent the message before editing it. She said she meant to limit her characterization to "the fanatical Muslim religion and philosophy."

State GOP Chairman Brandon Bell said many people are concerned but Morgan expressed herself poorly.

Morgan’s comments drew sharp criticism from Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Honda, who, along with his family, was among the estimated 120,000 Japanese Americans interned at 10 relocation camps in the U.S. after the Dec. 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan.

"I am outraged by reports of elected officials calling for Syrian Americans to be rounded up and interned," Honda, of San Jose, California, said in a written statement. "The Japanese and Japanese Americans interned after the bombing of Pearl Harbor was an outrage, as was turning away Jews at our borders who were fleeing German persecution. We cannot allow this to happen again."
