Temperature records tied despite breezy trades; Surf advisory extended

Continued strong tradewinds prompted the National Weather Service to extend a high surf advisory for east shores until Friday at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, despite the breezy conditions and sometimes rainy weather, record high temperatures were recorded at Hilo and Lihue.

The high temperature of 86 degrees at the Hilo Airport tied the record for the date last set in 1990. In Lihue, the high of 84 degrees tied a record last set n 1970.

The forecast for the state calls for partly sunny skies; strong tradewinds from the east of 14 to 25 mph, with gusts to 35 mph; and scattered showers.

“Up to Sunday night at least, our weather will be bothered by random sizes of areas of clouds and showers coming in with the trades. Some nights and even days, will be and can be wetter or drier. It depends on what is coming at us,” the weather service said in a forecast discussion this morning. “The weekend has a trade wind pattern of showers likely during the nights and mornings, and isolated showers for the afternoons. These showers will be favoring the windward and mountain areas, but a few of the showers will make it into the leeward areas of the smaller islands thanks to the breezy trades. The Kona side of the Big Island will have some isolated to scattered showers each afternoon.”

Rains were heaviest on Hawaii island Wednesday. In the 24 hours ending at 5 a.m. today, 3.6 inches fell on Saddle Quarry; about 2.1 inches was recorded at Hakalau and 1.4 inches fell in Mountain View.

On Oahu, .65 inches fell at Kawailoa; Pupukea Stream saw a little more than a half-inch of rain; and about .4 inches was recorded at Moanalua, and Poamoho.

The strong tradewinds are creating elevated, rough surf on the eastern shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island.

Weather officials estimate that surf will be 7- to 10-feet high through Friday.

They said beach goers should expect strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents that will make swimming difficult and dangerous.
