In his return to West Maui, James Horton carded the Rainbow Warrior golf team’s low round of the fall season on his way to the first top-10 finish of his college career.
The Lahainaluna graduate opened the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational with a season-low 4-under-par 67 last Friday and followed with rounds of 74 and 71 to finish in a tie for ninth in the 102-player field.
Horton’s three-day total of 1-under-212 helped UH place seventh among 19 teams entered, including six ranked in the top 40 nationally, in its final tournament of the fall.
Horton began his college career in 2012 at UH Hilo, where he played in three events as a freshman. He transferred to Manoa this season and promptly fired a 68 in his first Division I round at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Oct. 12 in Fairfax, Calif., where he eventually finished at 5 under and tied for 22nd.
That score stood as UH’s best of the fall until he circled five birdies against one bogey in his opening round at Ka’anapali Golf Course.
