Police are looking for the driver of a gray sport utility van that hit a woman walking on Waialae Avenue early Tuesday morning.
Emergency Medical Services reported the woman, in her 60s, was taken in critical condition to a hospital.
Lt. Carlene Lau, Honolulu Police Department traffic spokeswoman, said the woman was struck twice, by different cars, beginning at about 4:45 a.m.
A white sedan heading east clipped the woman with the driver’s-side mirror as she walked in the middle of Waialae Avenue, in front of Central Pacific Bank, Lau said.
The woman fell, dropping her belongings, but then got up and continued walking in the middle of the avenue despite attempts by the sedan driver and the driver of another car to get her off the roadway.
The woman was then hit by a speeding gray SUV, possibly an older Dodge Nitro, that didn’t stop, Lau said.
The SUV was missing the fender from the front passenger side, and the front and passenger side of the vehicle were damaged.
The driver wore a black hat and gray shirt, and had a mustache. He drove away on 11th Avenue.
Police said the injured woman might be homeless. She might have been disoriented after being released from the hospital Monday night, Lau said.
Police began a negligent injury and failure to render aid investigation, and are looking for witnesses. They plan to check video surveillance cameras in the area.
Police closed Waialae Avenue in the eastbound direction, between 9th and 10th avenues, while 10th Avenue was closed between Waialae and Harding avenues. The roads were reopened at about 7:05 a.m.
