There’s more than one way to look at unemployment, beyond Hawaii’s low 3.4 percent rate.
Government also measures “labor underutilization,” a more nuanced view. By the most comprehensive of these measures, Hawaii has an underutilization rate of 10.1 percent. That rate folds in the total unemployed; the “discouraged workers,” those who’ve given up looking for work; “marginally attached” workers, who are generally job seekers but didn’t look in the month before the survey; and those employed part-time because of the economy.
This isn’t meant to turn everyone’s smile upside-down, but just to fill out the joblessness picture a bit.
PBS show to offer insights into deal
PBS Hawaii’s “Insights” program on Thursday could be one of its most-watched shows ever, considering the topic and the four guests lined up to talk about it.
The subject is the pending sale of Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. to NextEra Energy Inc. of Florida, with the former being represented by Hawaiian Electric Co. President Alan Oshima and the latter by NextEra Energy Hawaii President Eric Gleason.
Also on hand will be Hawaiii Gov. David Ige, who is on record as opposing the transaction, so we’re not sure if the show is supposed to be a negotiation, a conversation or a debate.
Also on hand will be David Bissell, president of the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, presumably to talk about the benefits of cooperatively run utility monopolies.
Show time is 8 p.m.
