Morning showers should mostly clear by afternoon commute

The morning rains that brought wet roads, minor accidents and traffic backups on the freeway during the morning rush hour are likely to ease before the afternoon commute, National Weather Service forecasters said.

"It’s not going to be absolutely dry, but the real cloudy rainy stuff that we had this morning will be clearing by the afternoon commute," said Pete Donaldson, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather  Service.

A band of rain clouds blown in by the tradewinds settled over Oahu and Kauai this morning, but most of the rain clouds should move west by the early evening, Donaldson said.

Another band of clouds is likely to move over the Big Island tonight and tomorrow and some of the rain may reach Oahu tonight and Wednesday.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for a 50 percent chance of scattered showers through Wednesday with partly cloudy skies tonight and mostly sunny skies Wednesday. Winds are expeted to be from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph on Wednesday.

Once the next band of clouds passes, the weather should be mostly sunny through the weekend.
