A critical accident closed a section of eastbound lanes on Waialae Avenue between Ninth and 10th avenues this morning.

Police are looking for a gray sports utility vehicle that hit a homeless woman, who was walking in the middle of Waialae Avenue early this morning, and fled the scene.

Emergency Medical Services reported the woman, believed to be in her 60s, was taken in critical condition to the hospital.

Lt. Carlene Lau, Honolulu Police Department traffic spokeswoman, said the woman was struck twice by two different cars beginning at 4:45 a.m.

Lau said a white sedan clipped the woman with the driver’s side mirror as she walked in the middle of Waialae Avenue fronting the Kaimuki branch of Central Pacific Bank.

The woman fell, dropping her belongings.

Lau said the woman got up and continued walking in the middle of the road despite attempts by the driver and the driver of another car to get her off the road.

The woman was then hit by a speeding gray SUV, possibly an older model Dodge Nitro, which didn’t stop, Lau said.

Lau said the SUV is missing the tire fender from the front passenger side, and there is also damage to the front and passenger side of the SUV.

The driver was wearing a black hat and gray shirt and has a mustache.

He was last seen driving away from the accident on 11th Avenue.

Police are looking for witnesses and plan to check video surveillance cameras in the area.

Police closed Waialae Avenue, in the eastbound direction, between Ninth and 10th avenues, while 10th Avenue was closed between Waialae and Harding avenues while the accident was being investigated. Both roads were reopened at around 7:05 a.m.
