Tropical Storm Olaf continued to weaken today and may become a tropical depression Tuesday as it makes a u-turn and heads back toward Hawaii.

At 5 p.m. today, Olaf was located 1,210 miles east-northeast of Hilo, moving quickly northeast at 22 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 150 miles.

Surf generated by Olaf is lowering and the National Weather Service dropped a high surf advisory.

The National Hurricane Center is taking over the forecasts for Olaf since the storm moved back into the East Pacific  this morning.

It’s forecast to continue to weaken and should become a post-tropical depression by Friday.

Even though Olaf will head back toward Hawaii, the storm is too far away for its remnants to be picked up by the trade winds and bring rain to the state, forecasters said.
