The two victims in Wednesday’s shooting on Molokai identified Travis Torres as the man who shot them with a sawed-off 16-gauge shotgun, according to a Maui police affidavit filed Friday in Wailuku District Court.
Torres, 26, of Hoolehua, and Chad Naehu, 32, of Kaunakakai were both charged by Maui prosecutors Thursday with first-degree attempted murder. They also were charged with four firearm violations. Bail for each suspect was set at $1 million.
A preliminary hearing for the two men is scheduled for today in Wailuku District Court.
Police said Naehu admitted to being with Torres and identified Torres as the person responsible for shooting Whitney Borden and Richard Dayton, according to the affidavit.
Borden suffered a gunshot injury to the right side of his neck. Dayton was shot in his buttocks, the affidavit said. The two victims were flown to Oahu and taken to the Queen’s Medical Center for treatment.
Naehu also told police that he threw the shotgun used by Torres into some bushes at Torres’ property in Hoolehua, near where the shooting occurred at a home, 3550 Puu Kapele Ave., according to the affidavit.
After the shooting was reported, witnesses said Naehu and Torres fled on an all-terrain vehicle and a moped, which were later found at Torres’ property on Puu Kapele Avenue, the affidavit said.
The men turned themselves in to Molokai police at 10:15 p.m., eight hours after the shooting occurred.
Both men are convicted felons. Naehu has four felony convictions — two for second-degree theft and two for breaking into cars, starting in 2008. Torres has four felony convictions for car theft beginning in 2010.
