1. Wittek to Stubblefield
» Situation: Hawaii 10, Nevada 7, 5:24 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, third-and-four at Nevada 9.
» The Play: QB Max Wittek passes to WR Devan Stubblefield for their second touchdown connection of the first half.
» Impact: Hawaii continued a dominant first half that featured solid play from the offense, defense and special teams. Stubblefield caught eight passes for 91 yards.
» Hawaii coach Norm Chow: "He’s finally healthy. He had a rough time coming back from the (2014) knee (injury)."
2. Momentum Switch
» Situation: Hawaii 17, Nevada 7, 1:12 remaining, second quarter, Nevada set to kick off from its own 35.
» The Play: Hawaii is called for back-to-back 15-yard penalties. One for a player illegally leaping on an extra-point attempt, and a second on coach Norm Chow for arguing the first penalty. With the ball now at the Hawaii 35, K Brent Zuzo dribbles an on sides kick up the middle which he recovers at the Hawaii 23.
» Impact: Instead of Hawaii getting the ball back after Nevada’s first score, Zuzo eventually made a 40-yard field goal with 53 seconds left in the half, which ends with Hawaii holding just a one-score lead.
» Nevada coach Brian Polian: "I think that whole sequence of punching it in and then recovering the onside kick and kicking the field goal and instead of going in at halftime down 17-0, going in at 17-10, I think was a really big lift for the team."
3. Drying Up
» Situation: Hawaii 20, Nevada 20, 12:57 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, second-and-10 at own 41.
» The Play: Wittek is intercepted by SS Asauni Rufus at the Nevada 32. He returns it to the 38.
» Impact: Nevada drove to the Hawaii 13 and Zuzo kicked a 30-yard field goal to give Nevada its first lead.
» Hawaii offensive coordinator Don Bailey: "The game’s for 60 minutes, not 30, right? You’ve got to be able to finish. We talked about that all week. The score doesn’t matter, whether you’re up or down at the half, you have to keep playing."
4. Seau Sack
» Situation: Hawaii 17, Nevada 7, 0:06 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, first-and-10 at Nevada 42.
» The Play: OLB Ian Seau sacks Wittek for a loss of 7 yards, pushing the ball back to the Nevada 49.
» Impact: The first of Seau’s three sacks prevents Hawaii from coming back with a field goal at the end of the half.
» Seau: "Getting pressure has a lot to do with coverages and getting help from the rest of the D-line. Typically, we’ll play teams that get the ball out quick. Hike, one second, maybe two and the ball’s out. When I’m getting back there or Lenny’s (Jones) getting back or anyone’s getting back there, I’ve noticed the quarterback kind of freaking out because our DBs took away the first read."
5. Butler Did It
» Situation: Nevada 23, Hawaii 20, 2:20 remaining, fourth quarter, Nevada ball, second-and-goal at Hawaii 1.
» The Play: RB James Butler bulls in for his second touchdown.
» Impact: This score basically sealed the come-from-behind-victory for Nevada. Butler carried 28 times for 134 yards, part of a Nevada running game that went for 244 yards on 56 attempts.
» Butler: "I’m just a little guy trying to hide behind my linemen."
