Nearly $1M in damage from weekend house fires

Two house fires in Wahiawa and Haleiwa caused nearly $1 million in damage Saturday night, firefighters said today.

The first fire, reported about 7:30 p.m. on Ekolu Place in Wahiawa, caused $714,500 damage to multiple vehicles, the structure, and the contents, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. James Todd.

The second fire, which began about 7:35 p.m. on Ke Nui Road on the North Shore, caused $100,000 in damage, Todd said.

Thirty-five firefighters from eight companies battled the first blaze, which severely damaged the upper level of a two-story, multifamily house.

One person was home when the fire broke out but was alerted by a smoke alarm and was able to get out safely.

Todd credited the working alarm with helping to prevent serious injury and encouraged the public to regularly check home smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly.

Todd said the second fire involved a single-story wooden home that sustained approximately 50 percent damage before the fire was extinguished.

About 35 firefighters from eight companies responded to the call.

The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
