Hurricane Olaf weakens, produces high surf for east shores
Hurricane Olaf continues to weaken while moving away from Hawaii but is still generating high surf for the east facing shores, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu said.
At 5 p.m. today, Olaf was a Category 1 hurricane located 850 miles east-northeast from Hilo and 995 miles east-northeast of Honolulu moving northeast at 16 mph with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 40 miles and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.
Olaf is expected to weaken over the next couple of days and become a tropical storm late tonight or Monday, forecasters said.
A high surf advisory has been issued for east-facing shores of the Big Island until 6 a.m. Monday. Surf is expected to be as high as 6 to 10 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
