Work has begun on a new motor sports complex on I-15 about 10 miles south of Las Vegas. The $30 million SpeedVegas will have a 1.5-mile course where exotic cars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porches, can be rented and driven.
The complex, expected to be completed by early 2016, will also have a restaurant, meeting space and gift shop.
On the other side of town, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is converting a large seating area into a VIP hospitality section. The new area, called Vegas Village, will cater primarily to corporate clients.
>> Rio Seafood closing: After nearly 20 years the Rio Seafood Buffet is closing Nov. 8. It’s the only Las Vegas buffet ever to employ an all-seafood all-the-time concept. Many of the preparations will be worked into the Carnival World Buffet, available as an upgrade option there.
>> Wynn buffet closed for now: The Buffet at Wynn Las Vegas has shut down, but only temporarily. The revamped room will reopen Nov. 23 with “more than 120 new menu items.”
>> Restaurant magic: Rockhouse at the Venetian is featuring tableside magic performed by Seth Grabel of “America’s Got Talent” fame. Grabel roams table to table from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
>> Aria’s new gem: A nightclub called Jewel is coming to Aria. When Jewel opens early next year in the space formerly occupied by Haze, it will end more than a year in which Aria has been without a nightclub.
Question: With the ruling that requires daily fantasy sports to be licensed to operate in Nevada, do you expect the casinos to take up the slack with DFS betting?
Answer: The sports books experimented with DFS a couple of years ago with meager results. Now that the process is much better understood by the public, the casinos will eventually get around to offering it again, possibly in partnership with one of the recently ousted DFS companies, but probably not immediately.
