Fresno State generated 46 yards in a 91-yard scoring drive that ended in the game’s first touchdown. The Bulldogs covered the other 45 on three roughing-the-passer penalties called against Hawaii. The first two came after Fresno State passes fell incomplete on third down, giving the Bulldogs an automatic first down.
The first was called on cornerback Nick Nelson, who was also ejected for targeting on the play. David Manoa picked up the next on third-and-9 and Kennedy Tulimasealii was flagged for hitting Zack Greenlee in the head. Greenlee threw the first of his four first-half touchdown passes two plays later.
UH was flagged for 30 more yards on Fresno State’s next possession, another roughing the passer and an unnecessary roughness call on Kaaumoana Gifford, and the Bulldogs broke a 7-7 tie later in the drive.
A pass interference call to start Fresno State’s next drive was the Bulldogs’ sixth first down by penalty, as UH went into halftime with 10 penalties for 117 yards.
"You can’t have that many penalties and turn over the ball that much and expect to be successful," UH interim coach Chris Naeole said. "Some of the calls were tough, but I’m not going to sit here and question the refs."
The Rainbow Warriors picked up their fifth roughing-the-passer penalty in the third quarter and finished the game with a season-high 132 yards. Their 11 total penalties also matched a season high. The school record remains 205 yards against Portland State in 1977.
Gener ties TFL record
UH linebacker Julian Gener was credited with 17 total tackles, and his five for losses tied the UH single-game record.
Gener now shares the mark with Falaniko Noga, Mark Odom, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Houston Ala, Travis LaBoy and Art Laurel, who was the last to accomplish the feat, against South Alabama in 2012. Gener has 111/2 tackles for loss this season, second on the team behind Kennedy Tulimasealli’s 151/2.
"I’m a senior, and for a lot of the seniors it’s just two more games in their careers," Gener said. "You just have to keep working, stay with your assignments and have fun."
As a team, UH set a season high with 11 tackles for loss.
Camanse-Stevens catching on
Former Kamehameha quarterback Makoa Camanse-Stevens was UH’s receptions leader with six. He entered the game with three receptions for 86 yards this season and scored his first Division I touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Ikaika Woolsey early in the second quarter.
"I played in this stadium in high school, and just having the opportunity to come back out and play on the same field again in front of my hometown, it’s a blessing," said Camanse-Stevens, who transferred to UH from Western Arizona and walked on with the Rainbow Warriors.
Camanse-Stevens stepped in at slot receiver and finished the night with 63 yards. Marcus Kemp led UH with 105 yards on five receptions, all in the second half.
Injuries continue to mount
Dejon Allen, UH’s starting right guard, had to be helped from the field late in the first quarter and did not return. He was replaced on the offensive line by John Waa.
Kick returner Keelan Ewaliko was also injured in the second quarter and did not return. Pereese Joas took over return duties and had a 33-yard return in the third quarter.
UH was also without punt returner Nelson, who was ejected in the second quarter, and Dylan Collie took his place.
Wittek returns to action
After losing his starting job last week, Max Wittek entered the game in the third quarter in relief of Ikaika Woolsey, who completed eight of 20 passes for 92 yards with an interception in the first half.
Wittek’s first pass was tipped and intercepted. He then led two promising drives that ended in the lost fumble and an interception in the end zone. He finished the night 12-for-29 for 153 yards.
"I felt we needed a spark," Naeole said. "We moved the ball, we just didn’t put it in the (end zone). We turned it over twice in the red zone."
UH tied a season high with four turnovers, which was also Fresno State’s season high for takeaways.
Fresno widens series lead
Fresno State’s win on Saturday was its fifth straight in the series with UH. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 26-21-1. UH hasn’t beaten Fresno State since a 49-27 win in 2010 in Fresno, Calif., and the Rainbow Warriors’ last home win over the Bulldogs was a 37-30 victory back in 2007.
After losing to Air Force 58-7 in its previous Aloha Stadium appearance, UH lost back-to-back home games by 28 points or more for the first time since the final two weeks of the 1996 season (BYU and Wisconsin).
