Hawaii island police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash on Mamalahoa Highway in Kona on Saturday morning.
According to police, an unidentified man died when the 2003 Honda motorcycle he was operating veered off the roadway and down a large embankment after the rider failed to negotiate a turn.
The man, who sustained head injuries, was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been ordered.
Police believe speed and inattention were factors. The incident was reported at 10:47 a.m.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua at 326-4646, ext. 229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
This is the 17th traffic fatality on the island this year, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
Disabled sailboat towed to Ala Wai Harbor
The Coast Guard towed a 45-foot sailboat back to Ala Wai Harbor on Saturday after the boat lost control with 14 people on board and begin drifting toward the surf.
The incident happened Saturday morning about 3 miles Ewa of Diamond Head.
The Coast Guard said the vessel, Summer Breeze, became disabled because of depleted batteries. The crew tried sailing back to the harbor, but was unsuccessful and began drifting into the surf zone.
A passenger called the Coast Guard, which dispatched a 45-foot response boat.
The Coast Guard crew towed the Summer Breeze back to the harbor to prevent the vessel from running aground near Sand Island.
The Coast Guard said the owner made several attempts to contact commercial salvage companies, but none was available, prompting the Coast Guard response.
Suspect arrested after hotel lobby damage
A 25-year-old man was arrested Friday after he caused $1,500 in damage to a hotel lobby in Waikiki, police said.
The man, of no local address, was arrested at the Grand Waikikian by Hilton, at 1811 Ala Moana Blvd., about 11:30 p.m.
Police said the man damaged several items in the lobby about 10:45 p.m. and was stopped by hotel security and identified by a witness.
He was arrested for investigation of second-degree criminal property damage.
Visitor found unresponsive in Maui waters
KAANAPALI, MAUI >> Firefighters were called to the beach fronting the Sheraton Maui Resort in West Maui on Friday for an unresponsive person pulled from the ocean.
Lahaina firefighters arrived at 4:39 p.m. and found bystanders performing CPR on a male victim. Beachgoers pulled the man ashore after finding him unresponsive in the water about 75 feet from shore.
Emergency responders continued lifesaving measures. Paramedics transported the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The man is a 60-year-old visitor from East Bonney Lake, Wash. His condition was unavailable.
Boy in critical condition after pool incident
A 4-year-old boy was in critical condition on Saturday following a near-drowning incident at the Hilton Hawaiian Village swimming pool.
The incident was reported at 4:45 p.m. The boy was found unresponsive in the pool. Paramedics treated him at the scene before transporting him to an area hospital.
