An open-air retail center called Pawn Plaza has opened on Las Vegas Boulevard just south of downtown, next door to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop — run by Rick Harrison and made famous by the reality show “Pawn Stars.”
The two-story plaza, which is made up of cubicles similar to downtown’s Container Park, features mostly dining outlets, a few stores and a tavern above the Rollin Smoke Barbeque. A Pawn Plaza-branded wedding chapel is pending, and soon to open is Inna Gadda di Pizza, owned by the creators of the famed “secret pizza” outlet at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
>> Oscar’s apps: From 4 to 7 p.m. daily, several of the top appetizers at Oscar’s Steakhouse at the Plaza are deeply discounted. They include shrimp cocktail ($8) and steak tartare ($9), but the winner is the crabcakes. Normally $17, you get two for $9, and they’re among the best in town in terms of crab-to-filler ratio. Drinks are also discounted, with beers going for about $3.50.
>> Touchdown bonus: The Mardi Gras casino on Paradise Road east of the Strip has a good video poker offer during Monday Night Football. Whenever a touchdown is scored, a countdown strobe flashes for five minutes. Hit a natural four-of-a-kind while the light’s on and get a $25 bonus. The return during those five minutes is over 101 percent playing quarter video poker.
Question: Can you tell us about the farm near Las Vegas where you can pick fresh produce?
Answer: Gilcrease Orchard is about 10 miles north of downtown. It’s a pick-and-pay farm where you pick your own and take it home. This season it’s selling apple or pear cider for $2 a pint, along with cider doughnuts (six for $2.50) and caramel apples ($3). Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
