For the University of Hawaii football coaches, the lease expires at the end of the month.
Maybe some of the coaches will be retained by the next head coach, maybe not.
"I’m kind of a neat freak," said Chris Naeole, who was named interim head coach after Norm Chow was fired on Nov. 1. "Whatever I can do to help make this place a better place, even though we’re leaving here in three weeks … hopefully, we can clean up before (the new coach) gets here."
Naeole has been busy restoring order to a program that has lost seven in a row entering today’s game against Fresno State at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors are 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the Mountain West. The Bulldogs are 2-7 and 1-5.
Naeole changed the starting quarterback, named eight co-captains, gave full play-calling autonomy to the offensive and defensive coordinators, reworked the sessions in practice, and demanded a work place that is focused but fun.
"It’s a tough profession," said Naeole, expressing empathy for the coaches with wives, children and bills. "But (the) guys know about professionalism and showing up and doing your work. We’ve got three more weeks to do our job. What happens after that, happens."
Quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, who will make his second consecutive start and third this year, said the Rainbow Warriors are playing for pride and their supporters.
"We want to finish strong for our seniors," said Woolsey, a fifth-year junior. "Obviously, it’s been a disappointing year for them. Also, the past four years, the seniors haven’t been to a bowl game. I feel a little responsible for that, too. I want to come out and finish strong. We’re playing for the coaches and for the future. If we can finish on a good note, we can feel good about ourselves going into the offseason."
The Bulldogs and Warriors are both struggling.
"My biggest concern is every year we play them, no matter what their record is, they always give us a big fight," Fresno defensive lineman Todd Hunt said. "It’s always one of the toughest games of the season."
Both teams’ seasons have been marked with injuries, inconsistency at quarterback and unfortunate outcomes.
"This season, we had the opportunity to win a lot of games, and we fouled up a little bit," Fresno right tackle Justin Northern said. "I still have faith in this team for this season, and I have faith in this team for the future."
UH linebacker Julian Gener said: "We’re both struggling. There’s only one bone. Only one person can eat at the end of the night. We have to come out roarin’. We’ve got a good scheme. We should be rarin’ to go."
