Mililani routs Hilo in state football tournament

Mililani quarterback McKenzie Milton returned to action and the Trojans advanced to the semifinals of the Division I state football tournament with a 62-18 win over Hilo tonight at Aloha Stadium.

The defending state champion Trojans (10-2) raced to a 41-0 lead in the first half and will face second-seeded Saint Louis (8-1) in the Division I semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships on Nov. 13.

Mililani freshman Cy Kuboyama-Hayashi started for Mililani and shared playing time with Milton, who missed the Trojans’ previous four games due to a shoulder injury. Both threw two touchdown passes in the first half and they combined to complete 21 of 27 pass attempts for 338 yards in the game.

Milton threw his third touchdown pass on the opening drive of the second half, a 69-yard connection with Bryson Ventura. Kuboyama-Hayashi ended his varsity debut 7-for-8 for 76 yards.  

Running back Vavae Malepeai rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Makana Tauai caught six passes for 109 yards and a two touchdowns. Kalakaua Timoteo caught eight passes for 87 yards and a touchdown and Ventura the first of his two receiving scores before just before halftime.

Hilo quarterback Ka’ale Tiogangco threw two touchdown passes and ran for a 75-yard score in the second half and the Vikings, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, ended their season at 7-5.
