Dengue fever cases rise to 34 on Big Isle

The state Department of Health confirmed Thursday that another Hawaii island resident has contracted dengue fever, raising the number of locally acquired cases to 34.

The Health Department laboratory was closed Wednesday for the Veterans Day holiday. The new case was confirmed Tuesday, after the department’s 1 p.m. cutoff time to submit data for issuing a report.

The state lab is now testing all possible cases of dengue fever, both those associated with the outbreak on the Big Island and those acquired elsewhere.

Of the 34 confirmed cases, 26 are Hawaii island residents, and eight are visitors to the island. South Kona is a hot spot for exposure to the mosquito-borne virus.
