Hawaii County police recovered the top of the spear that was broken off and reported stolen from the 14-foot-high King Kamehameha statue in Hilo.
Police found the severed piece Tuesday in nearby overgrown bushes in Wailoa State Park.
The top of the spear had been reported missing from the statue Sunday afternoon. The theft occurred sometime between Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
On Tuesday detectives pursuing an investigation conducted checks in the channel behind the statue and found the missing piece in overgrowth on the banks of the waterway.
It will be processed for forensic evidence.
Detectives are checking for any surveillance video that may have captured the crime from nearby businesses and buildings.
