Hawaii County police are investigating a traffic accident that occurred Saturday night in connection with the death of a 62-year-old Washington state man.
Responding to an 8:38 p.m. call, officers found the man dead in a 2015 Hyundai four-door-sedan in the middle of Route 137 in Puna.
Police said there were signs that the car might have hit something on Route 137, Kalapana-Kapoho Road, just south of the 17-mile marker.
The man was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Police are awaiting autopsy results to check whether the man died of a medical condition.
Kilauea to have water shut off
The Kauai Department of Water has scheduled a 10-hour water shutdown for the Kilauea area from 6 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday.
Water will be turned off to allow the DOW’s contractor, Earthworks Pacific Inc., to connect a new water main.
Kilauea customers, from Kahili Makai Street to Kalihiwai Road, will have no water service during the shutdown.
There also may be low water pressure or intermittent water outages for nearby Waipake residents from Kahili Makai Street to Kapuna Road, and Kalihiwai residents on Kahiliholo Road. A detailed map of the affected areas can be found at www.kauaiwater.org.
The DOW will provide two water wagons for essential water needs at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center during the shutdown.
