The higher the win total, the higher the ranking. At least that continues to be the case for the Hawaii volleyball team.
The Rainbow Wahine (10-1), riding a five-match win streak, moved up a spot to No. 11 in Monday’s AVCA Coaches Division I Top 25, their highest ranking of the season.
One streak that didn’t continue was conference recognition, when the Big West honored two players from Long Beach State and one from UC Irvine on Monday. At least one Hawaii player had earned weekly honors the past three weeks, including three-peat Player of the Week winner junior hitter Nikki Taylor.
Breaking into the poll for the first time this season is defending Big West champion Long Beach State (10-3). The 49ers and the Wahine are two of five non-Power Five conference teams ranked, the others being No. 10 BYU, No. 19 Colorado State and No. 23 Pacific.
Defending national champion Penn State (11-0) remained the unanimous No. 1 for a second straight week as the top five were unchanged. Following the Nittany Lions are Texas (10-1), USC (12-0), Nebraska (9-1) and Florida (8-1). Rounding out the top 10 are Washington (10-0), Arizona State (11-0), Stanford (6-2), Illinois (9-2) and BYU (10-1).
Hawaii opens Big West play this week with UC Santa Barbara (4-7) on Friday and Cal Poly (8-3) on Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.
Swords’ LaBrie earns volleyball honor
Chaminade freshman middle blocker Daisia LaBrie was named the PacWest Freshman of the Week on Monday, her second such honor of the season.
LaBrie had 12 kills and hit .409 while helping the Silverswords (9-1, 2-0 PacWest) open conference play with two victories. She ranks sixth in the conference in blocks (1.05 bps) and is third in hitting percentage (.353).
Chaminade, tying its best start in program history, also continued to receive votes in the AVCA Coaches D-II Top 25 for the third straight week with 18 points.
Soccer honors for HPU’s Koenig
Hawaii Pacific Sven Koenig was named PacWest Conference Freshman of the Week in men’s soccer on Monday.
The native of Schuerte, Germany, scored his first career goal in the Sharks’ 6-1 win over Chaminade on Saturday.
In the match, Koenig tallied a team-high five shots, including two on goal.
