Hawaii island man found slumped in SUV faces drug charges

A Waikoloa man found slumped over in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with the motor running has been charged with drugs and weapons offenses after police confiscated heroin, methamphetamine, pharmaceutical pills and a switchblade from the sports utility vehicle.

Kona patrol officers said they received a call at 8 p.m. Friday from a concerned citizen in Kailua-Kona about a car that had been parked with the engine running for two hours. In the parking lot of a business on Henry Street, they found Derek Conway, 39, and after waking him said he appeared to be under the influence. Officers also reported finding drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Conway was arrested and taken to the Kona police cellblock, and when a search warrant of the SUV was executed Saturday morning officers said they found 40.7 grams of suspected heroin; 2.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine; 26 diverted pharmaceutical pills; a switchblade; and $4,457 in cash.

Conway was charged late Saturday afternoon with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant; first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug; four counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug; and one count each of fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possessing a prohibited switchblade.

Bail was set at $112,000 and police said he was released Sunday after posting bond.
