Hawaii’s John John Florence won his first-round heat during the Quiksilver Pro France on Thursday in Landes, Aquitaine, France.
Florence had a two-wave total of 18.60 in his heat against Brazil’s Alejo Muniz (10.93) and France’s Jeremy Flores (2.83).
Florence advanced directly to the third round.
Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz finished second in his heat with a 15.90, while Keanu Asing (4.97) and Dusty Payne (4.33) finished third in theirs.
All three local surfers will compete in the second round.
BYUH rallies past Point Loma Nazarene
Sinamoni Tonga had 21 kills and Ying Chun Chen recorded 58 assists as the Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team beat Point Loma Nazarene 25-21, 17-25, 18-25, 25-16, 15-13 on Thursday in San Diego.
Malary Reid added 19 kills and Leilani Adolpho had 17 for the Seasiders (8-7, 6-1 PacWest).
The Sea Lions fell to 8-7, 3-4.

Cuerten leads HPU men over Concordia
Josch Cuerten scored two goals as the Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team defeated Concordia (Calif.) 2-0 on Thursday in Irvine, Calif.
Cuerten scored at 20:46 off an assist from Christophe Campbell and at 66:34 off Kona Gaison’s assist.
The Sharks improved to 5-3-1, 3-1-1 PacWest, while the Eagles fell to 2-7, 2-3.

Kaisa Rogers scored two second-half goals as the Dixie State women’s soccer team beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 3-1 on Thursday in St. George, Utah.
Darian McCloy also scored for the Red Storm (4-5, 2-3 PacWest).
Kristine Reynolds scored on a penalty kick at 74:56 for the Seasiders (2-5-2, 1-2-1).
