No. 25 UCLA upsets No. 17 Hawaii in volleyball

Sophomore hitter Reilly Buechler had a match-high 18 kills and junior hitter Jordan Anderson added 15 as No. 25 UCLA handed No. 17 Hawaii its first loss of the season to win the championship of the 28th Hawaii Airlines Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Junior hitter Hayley Lawless added 10 kills for the Bruins (4-1) in the 24-15, 25-27, 25-17, 28-26 win that saw the Rainbow Wahine hold off four match points in Set 4 before falling. A season-high 7,436 (8,667 tickets watched  for 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Junior hitter Nikki Taylor led Hawaii (5-1) with 16 kills and senior middle Olivia Magill added nine. The loss snapped an eight-game home winning streak dating back to last season.

Hawaii had two swings to force a Set 5 when rallying to take leads of 25-24 and 26-25. UCLA used three blocks to close it out. 

It was the 10th Hawaiian Airlines Classic title for UCLA. 

The Wahine still hold a 37-36 edge in the series with the Bruins dating back to 1974, the first year of the Hawaii program. 

In what was a true third-place match, Iowa came back to beat American, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19.
