Coming off a successful road trip, Radford kept rolling in its return to OIA Division II play with a 54-14 win over Pearl City on Friday night.
Ace Faumui ran for three touchdowns and set up another score with an interception and the Rams pulled away from the Chargers to improve to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in league play.
Radford had given up just 12 points this season entering Friday’s game and held a 21-14 lead going into the second quarter. The first of Radford’s two blocked punts sparked a Rams surge and the defense shut out Pearl City the rest of the way to build on last week’s 74-6 win over Mt. Tahoma in Washington.
"We still made some mistakes. … Other than that I think the kids showed their resiliency with the way they performed tonight coming off a pretty long trip," Radford coach Fred Salanoa said.
Radford quarterback Quintin Iriarte led an efficient Rams attack in completing seven of eight passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
"Quintin has been struggling the past couple games and he came out pretty hot tonight and that was a positive situation for us," Salanoa said.
Kodi Ongory-Mathias ran for 83 yards on 19 carries and Faumui picked up 84 yards on just eight attempts, highlighted by a 50-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
"The most important thing about Ace is he’s a team player," Salanoa said. "He plays pretty much every snap on defense and we use him sparingly on offense.
"He’s a very special kid when it comes to running the ball and we need him on defense. … Also hat’s off to the offensive line. They’re doing a great job opening holes for him."
Pearl City (2-3, 2-3) jumped ahead after recovering a muffed punt to extend its opening possession of the game and Kekainalu Simon hit Israel Kaleo on a 9-yard post four plays later to open the scoring.
The Rams responded with touchdowns on their next three drives, with a 42-yard completion from Iriarte to Solomon Loggins setting up Faumui’s 10-yard scoring run.
Pearl City fumbled the ball away on its next play from scrimmage and Iriarte scored on a 12-yard keeper to give the Rams the lead.
Jake Walters then returned a Pearl City punt 19 yards to the Chargers 20 and Iriarte lofted a touchdown pass to Thomas Reid on the next play to extend the lead to 21-7.
Pearl City was forced to make a change at quarterback when Simon went to the sideline after a hard hit. Isaiah Asinsin entered the game and promptly threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Kavosiee Mason.
On the Chargers’ next possession, Radford’s Jordan Walker blocked a punt and the Rams recovered at the Pearl City 5. Ongory-Mathias scored on the next play and Faumui came up with an interception to set up Iriarte’s second touchdown pass of the game, a 27-yard completion to Loggins and Radford took a 34-14 lead into halftime.
Faumui punctuated the Rams’ first drive of the second half with a 50-yard touchdown run and scored from 1 yard to cap another short drive after Chevy Villanueva blocked another Pearl City punt.
