Court documents reveal new details in Kakaako attempted murder case
A 55-year-old Nuuanu man attempted several times to run down a 39-year-old homeless man in Kakaako last week, according to court documents.
According to a court document filed today, suspect Jon Hatakenaka drove his car towards the homeless man on Ahui Street Saturday morning, crossed into an oncoming lane, jumped the curb and was stopped by a fire hydrant that prevented Hatakenaka from hitting the victim.
The homeless man said Hatakenaka yelled at him, telling him he was going to die, according to the affidavit by a deputy sheriff.
The victim said he ran up the sidewalk past Hatanaka’s car, and the suspect made a U-turn, drove on the sidewalk, and yelled that he was going to hit him.
The victim crossed Ahui Street, and Hatakenaka tried to ram him again with his car, the statement said.
Deputy sheriff Blaise Atabay arrested Hatakenaka Saturday after a Kakaako Waterfront Park security guard said he saw the suspect in 2000 silver Kia sedan at 7:28 a.m. trying to run down a man on Ahui Street near Olomehani Street.

Security guard Nathan Lockwood said the victim, who had been walking his dog, was yelling at the driver and appeared to be upset, according the affidavit.
The victim told Lockwood that the suspect was previously arrested on Sept. 30 when he tried to hit the victim with a pipe.
A preliminary hearing for Hatakenaka on a second-degree attempted murder charge is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in District Court. He is being held in Oahu Community Correctional Center, unable to post bail of $500,000.
