A mother and infant escaped serious injury Monday when they were swept away by fast-rising water while hiking the Maunawili Falls Trail.
According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins, a family of six from California was hiking the trail at about 3 p.m. when a flash flood swept the woman and infant downstream.
Other hikers in the area assisted the woman and baby out of the water. The flood separated the family into three groups, but fellow hikers escorted each family member safely off the trail.
