McInerny commits to Warrior volleyball
Punahou junior setter/libero Daniel "DJ" McInerny has given his oral commitment to play for the Hawaii men’s volleyball team, becoming Rainbow Warrior coach Charlie Wade’s first recruit for the 2017-18 school year.
The 5-foot-9 McInerny was part of the Buffnblu team that defeated Kamehameha-Hawaii in May for the program’s fourth consecutive state title and 33rd dating back to 1972. McInerny cited the recent resurgence it the Rainbow Warrior program — Hawaii was one of six teams to advance to the NCAA tournament in May — and playing at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of family and friends as his main reasons to stay home.
"It definitely helped that the program is rising," McInerny told the Star-Advertiser. "I want to be a part of that. I love the atmosphere in the Stan Sheriff Center. There’s no other place in the nation where you will get that."
Wednesday was the first day that juniors could make an oral commitment. McInerny played for A’o a Koa Volleyball Club, which finished tied for fifth in the 16s Open Division at July’s USAV Boys Junior National Championships in Dallas.
