Suspect charged with attempted murder of homeless man in Kakaako
The state charged a 55-year-old Nuuanu man with attempted murder for allegedly trying to run over a homeless man several times with his car Saturday morning at a homeless camp in Kakaako.
Jon Hatakenaka is charged with second-degree attempted murder and criminal contempt, according to a news release this morning from Attorney General Douglas Chin. His bail was set at $500,000.
The incident occurred at 7:36 a.m. Saturday near Ahui and Olomehani streets.
A state deputy sheriff arrested Hatakenaka. Because the incident happened on state land, the Attorney General is prosecuting the case.
Hatakenaka already has a case pending against him for terroristic threatening in the second degree against the same victim, Chin said in the news release. The Honolulu Office of the Prosecuting Attorney is in charge of the terroristic threatening case.
