A 20-year-old Waimea man died following a two-car collision on Mamalahoa Highway, Route 190, on Saturday evening, Hawaii County police said.

He has been identified as Jourdan Evangelista.

The crash happened at about 7:45 p.m. a half-mile south of the three-mile marker in Waimea.

Police said Evangelista was a front-seat passenger in a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta traveling north when the driver lost control on a wet curve. The Jetta veered into the oncoming southbound lane, where it was broadsided by a 2014 Dodge Caravan driven by a 55-year-old Waikoloa woman.

Evangelista was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. An autopsy was ordered. The condition of the other occupants was uncertain.

Police have launched a negligent homicide investigation.

This is the 16th traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year, compared with nine at this time last year.

Missing inmate caught by police

Police on Maui captured work furlough inmate LeRoy Wright on Saturday night and returned him to the Maui Community Correctional Center, the state Department of Public Safety said by email.

Wright, 37, left the prison to go to work at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday but fled later in the day, officials said.

Wright  is serving time for burglary and now likely will be charged with escape, officials said Sunday. He was tentatively approved for parole to begin Oct. 14.
