Prosecutors charged a 56-year-old man with no local address Thursday in the stabbing of a 39-year-old man in Chinatown.
Anh Bui was charged with first-degree assault. His bail was set at $150,000.
Police said a man stabbed the 39-year-old man at about 1:40 a.m. July 29 in Chinatown.
The younger man was taken in serious condition to an area hospital where he was treated and later released.
Police arrested Bui on Tuesday on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. The case was later reclassified to an assault.
Home where squatters were evicted burns
A Hawaii island abandoned home where police evicted squatters a month ago was destroyed by fire Thursday morning, police said.
Damage to the single-story structure at Azure Drive in Pahoa was estimated at $100,000.
Thirteen firefighters responded to the alarm that was called at 6:16 a.m. The fire was brought under control 17 minutes later.
The Hawaii County Council has formed a task force to find ways to handle squatters living in vacant, bank-owned homes in Puna.
Last week Hawaii County police arrested eight people for illegally squatting in a Puna home while claiming Hawaiian sovereignty rights.
Man arrested in assault on police officer
Prosecutors charged a 26-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Chinatown on Wednesday.
Officers arrested Dominic Silga just after the incident occurred, at about 9 a.m., for allegedly assaulting a 33-year-old female police officer on River Street.
He is charged with third-degree assault and first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and is being held on $20,000 bail.
Sketch released of salon robbery suspect
Police released a description and a sketch of the man suspected of robbing a Pensacola beauty shop last month.
Police said the suspect, who is 5 feet 5 inches tall, entered the Hair One Salon at 1019 Pensacola St. at 7:38 p.m. July 17 . He brandished a handgun, demanded money, assaulted a victim and fled.
The man is believed to be in his 4os or 50s and weighs about 160 pounds. He was dressed in a gray, hooded sweater, black pants and gray shoes.
