Tesla’s first SUV, the Model X, is finally hitting the road
FREMONT, California » Tesla Motors’ first SUV is finally on the road.
Tesla will officially unveil the Model X Tuesday night at its California factory.
The electric SUV is the third vehicle from 12-year-old Tesla, which currently makes only the Model S sedan. It should bring Tesla new customers and let the company capitalize on the booming market for luxury SUVs.
The new SUV has three rows and seats seven. Its most unique feature is its falcon-wing rear doors, which open upward.
Pricing hasn’t been announced, but CEO Elon Musk says the Model X costs $5,000 more than the Model S, which starts at $70,000.
Musk announced plans for the Model X in 2012, and it was initially expected to go on sale in early 2014. Musk says its complicated design caused delays.
