Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor will compete in the Outrigger Resorts Duke Kahanamoku Sand Volleyball Pro-Am on Tuesday, one of 27 events in the 14th Duke’s OceanFest that opens its nine-day schedule on Saturday.
May-Treanor, an All-America setter at Long Beach State, won beach volleyball golds at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Games. The sand volleyball event will be played on the beach fronting the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort.
OceanFest coincides with the 125th anniversary of the birthday of Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii’s first Olympian and considered the father of modern surfing.
Saturday’s opening events include the Waikiki SUP Paddle Fest off Kuhio Beach; the Outrigger Resorts Keiki Sand Volleyball Tournament and Na Koa Wounded Warriors Canoe Regatta, all starting at 8 a.m. in Waikiki. The opening ceremony is at 5 p.m. with a lei-draping of the Kahanamoku Statue at Kuhio Beach.
Competition runs through Aug. 30, and includes surfboard water polo, a 1-mile ocean swim, tandem surfing, a longboard pro-am and dog surfing. Entry forms and a complete schedule are available at dukesoceanfest.com.
