An autumn wreath is a simple way to add that fall touch and can be relatively easy to make, said Rachel Alencastre, craft coordinator for Ben Franklin Crafts in Mapunapuna. Alencastre demonstrated some simple wreath-making techniques using straw and grapevine bases. Floral picks, ribbons and ornaments can be used to embellish the base. The same techniques could create wreaths for any holiday or occasion.
"The grapevine wreath is nice because you can push things in between the branches," she said. Floral picks range in price from $3 to $7. Ribbon prices are approximately $6 to $7 per roll. Wreath bases are typically between $15 and $20.
Greening pins make it simple to attach things to the base. A two-pinned prong can be pushed through the fabric or over an item to hold it in place.
"Holiday embellishment and new items can be added to a base as the seasons change," Alencastre said. "The possibilities are endless."
GRAPEVINE WREATH
Supplies:
» Grapevine wreath base
» Floral picks and ornaments
» Glue
» Ribbon
» Pipe cleaner
Push the stems of the flowers or picks between the branches of the base. Glue any loose or heavier items down. Make a bow using the ribbon and attach using a pipe cleaner.
STRAW BURLAP WREATH
Supplies:
» Straw wreath base
» Burlap ribbon (at least 2-inches wide)
» Greening pins, two-pronged pins
» Scissors
Cut the strips of ribbon at an angle, 6 inches long. Wrap burlap ribbon around the base and secure with a greening pin. Attach shorter strips of ribbon to the straw base by piercing through the center with greening pins. Push the pins into the base in different directions to create a design. Use contrasting ribbons for desired effect.
