Search to resume for missing swimmer at Hilo park
Hawaii island firefighters will continue their search Wednesday for a 62-year-old woman who was caught in the fast moving currents of Wailuku River while swimming at Boiling Pots.
The victim and a man were swimming in the upper pond at Boiling Pots at Wailuku River State Park just after 5:30 p.m. Monday when they got into trouble, but only the man was able to make it to the river bank.
The Fire Department conducted scuba dive operations in the upper pond, but did not find the woman Tuesday.
Fire rescue personnel did recover a tube and an inflatable noodle the woman was using in the pond.
“The weather is bad, and the river is running strong so they suspended the search at about 4:30 p.m.,” fire Battalion Chief Gerald Kosaki said.
Only an aerial search could be conducted due to the the rough water conditions on Monday.
