A regular at the top of the team standings last season, Montana Martinez took a turn in the lead again for the Rainbow Wahine last weekend.
Martinez placed second in the Chaminade Invitational last Saturday to lead UH to its first team victory since 2010. The 5-foot sophomore completed the 5-kilometer course around Kapiolani Park in 18 minutes, 23.4 seconds and was named the Big West Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Martinez was UH’s leading runner in all eight meets in which she competed last season. Her best time as a freshman was a 19:30 in last year’s Chaminade meet and she’s finished under that mark in each of her three 5K races this fall. She set a personal best of 17:57.3 at the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento, Calif., on Oct. 3.
The Rainbow Wahine return to Northern California this week to close the regular season at the Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara on Saturday. The 6K race leads into the Big West Championships set for Oct. 31 in Riverside, Calif.
