What does $41.8 million buy you these days? In Wailea, Maui, it’s a luxury home and secondary dwelling on a 4-acre lot with elevated views over Palauea Beach.
Described as a record-breaking price for a residence on Maui, an unidentified real estate investor quietly paid that amount for the Wailea property in April, property records show. The transaction will take its rightful place on the list of what one market researcher described as “mind-numbing” sales in the last few years that keep pushing up real estate values.
It appears the Korth Family Trust of Calgary, Alberta, got a huge return on its investment. The trust bought the lot at 4446 Makaena Road for $5.25 million in 2008 and built a 6,737-square-foot main house in 2011 and a 1,004-square-foot secondary dwelling in 2012. The value of construction, according to building permits, was close to $6 million. And the property wasn’t even listed for sale.
Outrigger canoes compete with thrill-craft
If a dull roar rises from the Marine Education and Training Center at the Thursday public forum near Sand Island, it won’t be the sound of jet skis revving up, that’s for sure.
It’s likely going to be the rumble of outrigger canoe enthusiasts and their thrill-craft rivals, all of them venting about the limited space they share at Keehi Lagoon.
Exactly how the state regulators manage this balancing act will be something to see. But if the scales have to tip one way, it should be toward the paddlers. The outrigger clubs have been practicing at Keehi for much longer than the other craft — and they should get a bit of an edge in Hawaii, if nowhere else.
