Though last year’s Zombie Crawl almost got washed out by a hurricane, it should be no surprise that zombies are planning to rise again this year and lumber through Chinatown. After all, we’re talking about zombies, the pop culture phenomenon that also refuses to die.
This year the stench of zombie romance will be in the air, with dating services and weddings for the undead available at the fifth annual Hawaii Zombie Crawl, taking place Saturday at 13 downtown venues.
"People are actually asking me, ‘Do I have to be single?’ No, you don’t. It’s just a theme," said Dania Weinberg, who calls herself the chief brain surgeon of the event.
Nevertheless, it might be fun to detach yourself for a while to find a new soul mate, or at least a ghoul mate.

The event includes a Zombie Dating Game, starting at Nextdoor at 6 p.m. It’s modeled after the 1970s television game show but "zombified," Weinberg said. "We’ll probably have a few actors in there just to make it fun, and we’ll have questions for them to ask."
Those who find true and undying love can then proceed to an Undead Wedding Ceremony at Manifest, starting at 8 p.m. A photo booth will be available to enshrine your nuptials in all their gruesome glory.
"We have props set up, with a rotting trellis set up," said Weinberg, who works in the wedding industry when not a zombie. "And we’ll have a red carpet and a zombie preacher, and we’ll have some props, like a bridal veil and some dead flowers."
Makeup artists will be available at Nextdoor starting at 4 p.m., charging $15 to $65 a head, so to speak.
But Weinberg encourages people to do their own makeup. "There are tutorials online," she said. "It’s fairly easy. You just use toilet paper and Elmer’s glue and blood — fake blood, of course."
Crawlers can keep track of the evening’s events via an Instagram Storyboard Contest, which will be run like a scavenger hunt. "You have to take pictures at all the venues, take pictures with our sponsors," Weinberg said. "You hit all those bases, go to all those venues, and in the meantime you share your full experience with us."
The winner gets $150, which is also the top prize for the costume contest, to be held at midnight at Nextdoor. Participants are advised to register early, as entries are limited.
Last year’s storm-affected event drew about 1,000 participants, but previous zombie crawls have drawn up to 2,000, of all ages and walks of life. Weinberg expects more this year, weather permitting. "It’s the spectacle," she said. "Everyone gets to participate and everyone gets to dress up. And really, it’s the dressing up that makes it fun."
Participating venues are Downbeat Lounge, Bar 35, The Dragon Upstairs, Hank’s Cafe, O’Toole’s Irish Pub, Fresh Cafe, Nextdoor, Manifest, Scarlet, JJ Dolan’s, Bethel Street Tap Room, Proof Public House and the ARTS at Marks Garage. Entertainment includes music from the Deadbeats, Good Foot, Pimpbot, Completely Insane, Emke and the Fresh Preps, along with DJs Roman Candles and Mr. Nick.
