New Mormon leaders expected to be named at conference

SALT LAKE CITY >> Mormons are eagerly anticipating a church conference that kicks off Saturday in Salt Lake City where as many as three new high-ranking leaders could be chosen.
Scholars predict that for the first time ever, at least one could be from outside North America and Europe. That has added intrigue to already high levels of interest among Mormons.
The two-day conference brings nearly 100,000 people to Utah. Millions more watch live broadcasts.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints needs the new leaders to fill vacancies on the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. It is a governing body that sets church policy and runs the faith’s business operations.
It has been six years since a new quorum member was chosen. The last time there were three was in 1906.
